How to Write The Perfect Essay Cover Page

When you hand over a study paper to a teacher, its design should be in a certain style. There are a number of requirements that every student should be familiar with. The cover sheet for an essay should contain information about its subject, performer and leader, as well as the date of writing. This turns the essay itself into an official document, which will subsequently be stored in an educational institution for a specified period. That is why it is important to maintain proper design of the title page. Read on to know what is a cover page for an essay.

Title page information

The title page is the face of student work that makes the first impression. Whether it is good or bad is up to you. And on whether you know how to arrange and how to make a cover page for essay.

Many students consider title pages to be an unnecessary convention, but they came up with them for a reason. This page allows you to find out all the required information about the job without reading it. Very convenient for accounting and storage. The title page of the essay should contain the following information:

  • The name of the educational institution where the work was written
  • Well-formulated topic, disclosed in the following text
  • The subject on which the essay is being written
  • Information about the student: surname, initials, course / class, specialty (for universities)
  • Information about the teacher who will check the work
  • City and year of writing

Of course, for each educational institution, these requirements can be adjusted, have their own individual nuances.

Therefore, it is always important to carefully clarify with the teacher the features of the design of the work. However, the general pattern is the same for everyone, the difference is usually expressed only in minor details. Title page types

There are two main variants of the two-band title. In one embodiment, each band is a complete, to some extent independent part of the overall composition. This option is often used in multi-volume and serial publications. On the left page of the spread, the so-called countertitle, information relating to the entire publication or to the entire series as a whole can be placed, and on the right page – the main title – information about this volume (other options are also possible). A similar title may be given in the translated edition. In this case, the title in the original language is placed on the left, in the target language on the right. This kind of title is often called a reversal title.

In another version, the composition of the two-page title is a single, inseparable whole, the text and graphic elements begin on the left page of the spread and end on the right, often capturing the spine margins as well. With such a title – unlike the first one, it can be conditionally called a swing – the graphic designer has a large pictorial field on which you can place a large image or a complex composition. The swing title is used mainly in specially designed editions of fiction and popular science literature, in books on art.

Sometimes in small brochures designed for a short period of use, to save paper, a title-cap is placed instead of the title page. This technique is often practiced in magazines.

In order for the title to be well perceived by the reader, it is necessary to single out the most important information from all the diverse and unequal information placed on it, make the connection between them clear, and reveal their subordination and unity. All this is achieved primarily by the appropriate selection of fonts, logical grouping of lines and their reasonable arrangement.

Font design of the title page can be solved in a variety of ways. First of all, the title can be single-headed or multi-headed. Using the font of one typeface and even one style, it is easier to give the design integrity, unity. But even with the skillful selection of two or more sets, one can achieve unity, however, more complex; at the same time, such a combination of fonts makes it possible to highlight certain lines of the title more strongly. However, in case of unreasonable, accidental connection of several typefaces, the artistic integrity of the title is lost, its connection with the design of the rest of the elements of the book is broken.

The most important information for the reader is the headline information – the author’s name and the title of the book. They should be highlighted the most strongly. Usually the name of the publication gives the reader more essential information, and therefore it is for him that the largest font is assigned, and the author’s name is typed in a slightly smaller size.

APA title page style

The APA style of essay cover sheets was developed by the American Psychological Association. Today it is one of the most common formats for the design of scientific and research papers, especially in the fields of psychology, sociology, business, mathematics, economics, nursing, as well as justice and law. It can be difficult to grasp all the APA requirements right away, but with the help of the tips below, you can easily prepare an APA-style publication.

Find instructions for designing publications in the APA style. Look in a bookstore, library, or use an Internet search. The official instructions contain detailed information about the features of the APA style, and the most recent editions have sections on the ethics of printed materials, Internet sources, tables and graphs.

The text editor may contain templates and APA style guides. Microsoft Word, WordPerfect and EasyOffice programs have the ability to automatically format bibliographies, footnotes and citations in accordance with APA requirements.

Study the formatting features of a future publication. APA-style formatting includes many technical details: font size, line spacing, margins, headers. All of these requirements must be met in order to receive the best mark for the design of your work.

  • For body text, use a 12 point serif font (such as Times New Roman). Use a sans-serif font (such as Arial) for illustration titles and captions.
  • Use double spacing for all material, including body text, headings, footers, footers, citations, bibliography, and illustration captions.
  • Indent the first line of each paragraph to 1.27 cm (1/2 inch).
  • Align the text to the left, leaving the right margin jagged.

First, format the title position to the center of the page. The length of the title should not exceed 12 words. Press Enter and type in your name. Under the name is the name of your university or other educational institution.

All text is double-spaced and centered. The title should not contain abbreviations or introductory words.

If you have any author’s notes, please post them at the bottom of the title page. This information may include details of grants received or contact details for sending correspondence.

Insert a header at the top of the cover page. The “header” should contain an abbreviated (no more than 50 characters) title of your work. Write in a text editor in capital letters: “TITLE: [INSERT YOUR TITLE HERE]”, left aligned. There is a header on every page. After the first page, the word “TITLE” does not need to be written, only the abbreviated title of the work. The page number should be on the right edge (on all pages).

MLA First Page Example

A cover page is not required in a standard runway report. The title and other information is placed on the first page of your report. What is a title page for an essay MLA?

Start typing in the top left corner of the page. The standard font choice is Times New Roman at 12pt and you must align the text to the left. It is also recommended that you do not use the automatic hyphenation features and use only one space after a period or other punctuation mark, unless you are told otherwise.

  1. Starting one inch from the top of the page, left aligned, place your name, teacher’s name, grade, and date. Use double spacing for lines between each element and don’t use any fonts.
  2. Still using double spacing for the lines, enter the title. Center the heading and do not use fonts unless required by the MLA style, such as headings.
  3. Double space below the heading and start typing the report. Tab indent. The standard format for a book title is italics.
  4. Don’t forget to end your first paragraph with a thesis.
  5. Your name and page number are placed in the header at the top right corner of the page. You can insert this information after you print your article. To do this, in Microsoft Word, go to View and select Heading from the list. Enter your information in the title field, highlight it, and right-click to align the selection.

If your teacher requires a title page, you can use this template as a guide.

  • Place the report title about one third down the page.
  • Place your name about 2 inches below the heading, as well as the names of any group members you may have.
  • Place your class information about 2 inches below your name.
  • As always, you should check with your teacher before writing the final draft for any specific instructions that differ from the examples you find.

Chicago Style Cover Page

The Chicago style of writing essay first page is often used for historical articles, but this style is called the Turab style when referring specifically to research papers. The Chicago Manual of Style was first written in 1891 by the University of Chicago Press to standardize the process of proofreading and editing many documents that were given to proofreaders. Here’s everything you need to know about formatting in this style.

Paper margins can be a problem. Too many students fall into the trap of trying to customize the margins to match the requirements of the article. Instructors usually ask for a one inch margin, but the preset margin on your word processor might be 1.25 inches. So what are you doing?

If you’re following the Chicago style, you’ll need to make sure your margins are the correct size. The Chicago style requires one inch margins on the top, sides, and bottom of the paper. Reformatting can be tricky, but you can always ask your professor to help with it.

As for line spacing, your document should be double-spaced, except for quotes, captions, and headings.

Chicago Style requires 1/2 inch indents before all paragraphs, bibliographies, and citations. You may need to go into your document settings to change the automatic tab indent size, but most text editors use 1/2 inch indents by default.

Center your headings roughly in the middle of the title page.

When you use subtitles, put them on the line below the title and use a colon after the title to enter it.

Center your name on the line below the title, then include the instructor’s full name, course title, and date. Each of these elements must be on a separate line.

Headings must not be bolded, italicized, enlarged, underlined, quoted, or written in any font other than Times New Roman 12 pt.

Using a Template

As a rule, each educational institution or other organization that practices the preparation of reports, abstracts, term papers and other similar works has developed its own cover page template and guidelines for filling the first page of an essay out. Therefore, in addition to the general rules provided for by Interstate standard , it is necessary to take into account additional requirements in force in a particular organization.

If there are no special design standards and your own template has not been developed, you can find the source code yourself. There are a huge number of them on the web. It is enough to choose the most suitable in a particular situation, download and adjust to suit your goals.

You can also limit yourself to the standard features of the Word. This text editor has a set of cover page templates for various types of work. All required blocks have already been placed in their places, fonts, spacing and alignment have been configured – and all that remains is to enter your information into empty windows.

To find the standard front page of an essay, you need to select the “Insert” tab in the Word menu. Here in the first paragraph are the necessary templates. You just have to find the one that is most suitable in a particular case, and fill it in with your data. If desired, the design settings (font, text color and background), the number of blocks and other parameters can be adjusted.

Another option is to use the examples prepared by us as the basis for your cover page, by which you can at least check whether all the parameters are met and the details are taken into account.

Original title

If you wish, you can actually create your own layout of the first page of essay and design it in an original way. For this, minimal skills in a text editor are enough. Word has the ability to save your template so that you can use it again later. It will always be available in the list of standard cover sheets.

The step-by-step creation of the original title page essay format is as follows:

Step 1: Create a new document in Word. This can be done in one of the following ways:

Through the start menu. You need to click on the appropriate button, find the Word and run it. A new text document will open automatically.

Through the context menu. In the folder where the file with the title page will be located, press the right mouse button. A menu appears in which you need to select the “New” item and the file type “Microsoft Office Word Document”.

Step 2 – set the page parameters. In the settings, you need to set the margin sizes, select the type and size of the font, as well as the spacing.

Step 3 – Insert the necessary elements. Text blocks are placed on the page. In the “Tab” menu, you can select ready-made blocks (“subject”, “date”, etc.) and use them on your cover page.

Step 4 – save your template. To do this, select everything that is on the page (click on the “Select All” button), select the “Insert” tab in the main menu, then go to the “Page” item and then “Cover Page”. You will find the “Save selection to collection…” command, with which you can add your template to the general collection. A window will open with the name of the sample. You can add a description here if you like.

The essay front page is a kind of face and a presentation of the work done, how to do it correctly, was clearly described in the instructions and shown with examples. You can arrange it according to the rules of the manual. The subtleties of how the title page will be made also depend on the educational institution.
